Caves & History in Puerto Rico Sep 15-19

On this DreamTrip to Puerto Rico, explore caves and experience the mysteries and beauty of historic Old San Juan.

About Your Trip

Head to the northern karst country of Puerto Rico, a rural region of untouched natural reserves and dozing cattle, punctuated by beaches and caves. Karst topography, formed by the dissolution of soluble rocks, features underground drainage systems with sinkholes and caves. Visit Cueva Ventana, the “Window Cave,” and Cueva del Indio, also called “Indian Cave”; along with spectacular views, you’ll see rock carvings in Cueva del Indio dating back to when Taino Indians roamed the land — around the same time that Christopher Columbus arrived in the New World. Later in the week, see the historic highlights of Old San Juan and taste what’s publicized as the “original piña colada” at Restaurant Barrachina.

What we love:
• Cueva del Indio and the area around it have been seen in movies such as “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
• The snazzy Condado neighborhood boasts sophisticated bistros, beaches and its own equivalent of New York City’s Fifth Avenue — Ashford Avenue (where the hotel is), with luxury stores such as Cartier, Ferragamo, Gucci and others.
• La Fortaleza, the governor’s residence, has served as the residence of more than 170 governors of Puerto Rico, and has hosted dignitaries such as U.S. Presidents John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama.

Check out this DreamTrip on Facebook.

This trip will close by August 8.

Destination

One of the oldest European settlements in the Western Hemisphere, the seaside city of San Juan, Puerto Rico, is also one of the Caribbean’s liveliest and most engaging hubs. Since 1898, Puerto Rico has been an unincorporated territory of the United States.

From historic Spanish architecture such as the city’s former defensive forts — Fort San Felipe del Morro and Fort San Cristóbal — to beaches, art museums and nightlife, San Juan puts on a mesmerizing spectacle. The city’s La Fortaleza, the official residence of the governor, is the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the New World and is a U.S. National Historic Landmark and (along with the San Juan National Historic Site) a UNESCO World Heritage site.
